A Doctor Who Fan Fiction story. Part One Of Two

This story was written in 2005 during the broadcast of Series One.

The story stars Christopher Eccleston as The Doctor and Billie Piper as Rose Tyler and

is set between the episodes 'World War Three' and 'Dalek'.

It was inspired by actual events but the majority of it is ficticious.

WARNING: The story contains mildly graphic scenes and is not recommended for anyone under 12. Read at your own risk!

‘Ding Dong.’ A doorbell rang at the house of Daniel Tomkins.

Daniel was a cheery tall man who was dressed in a brightly coloured shirt and black trousers. He had a greying beard and wore glasses.

Daniel walked through to the hallway and opened the door.

A man stood there with a parcel.

‘Summers?’ he asked holding it out.

‘Pardon?’ questioned Daniel unsure of what the man had said.

The man repeated himself.

‘I think you’ll find it’s Spring actually!’ joked Daniel.

The man looked puzzled but continued to hold out the parcel.

‘Never mind, it was a joke.’ Said Daniel. ‘The parcel’s not for me, I’m Tomkins.’

The man sighed and went off with the parcel. Daniel shut the door.

‘Who was that?’ asked Amy, his wife, unpacking mugs from a box.

‘Only Parcel Force looking for the wrong name.’

‘Oh.’ Came the reply.

The rest of that week for Daniel and his wife was pretty quiet as they settled into the new home and he prepared his first talk ready for Sunday.

Sunday came quickly and Daniel arrived at the church about ten o’clock. He made sure the PowerPoint presentation was set up and the church band ‘Out here’ were ok with the songs.

A man called Stan was to be part of a drama sketch heckling the service. He was changing out the back into his costume.

Before long, people started to arrive and take their places in seats ready for the service to begin.

‘Good Morning Everybody’ announced Daniel as he began the service.

Soon it was time for the drama sketch with Stan. The majority of the people in the congregation knew what to expect in the service but there was a couple that hadn’t been before to this church, but were used to old-fashioned services.

The sketch started with Daniel beginning his sermon, which was then interrupted by Stan.

‘I don’t have to listen to this!’ exclaimed Stan and stood on his seat ready to argue with Daniel as part of the sketch.

‘Everything you are waffling is a load of rubbish!’ Stan continued.

The new couple were disgusted at this – a man interrupting a service – it shouldn’t be allowed.

The man of the couple called John got up from his seat and went over to Stan. ‘Come along now, this isn’t the time and place for this sort of attitude.’ He tried to get Stan off his seat so he could sit down. The rest of the congregation laughed and thought it was part of the sketch, which it wasn’t.

Stan tried to ignore John and continue with the sketch but he wouldn’t let it go easily.

John could see he was being ignored and so tried to pull Stan down while shouting ‘Just leave it will you!’

Daniel could see it was time to intervene so he walked over to John and asked ‘What’s your name?’

John looked at Daniel and replied ‘Summers, John Summers.’

‘Ok John, well all this fuss with Stan here is part of a sketch we were doing.’

‘Oh was it? Well it wasn’t a very funny one.’

Daniel took John back to his seat and settled him and then returned to the pulpit. ‘Sorry about all that.’ He apologised.

In his seat, John, breathing heavily, was muttering away about how awful it all was.

A bit later…

Daniel was in a ‘debriefing’ meeting out the back, in the vestry, when suddenly he heard a cry for help. Daniel rushed through to the church hall where people were drinking tea and coffee to see what the matter was.

There was a circle of people looking at something. Daniel struggled through and when he got to the middle he saw John Summers lying on the ground with his wife by him.

John was dying from a heart attack.

Daniel knelt down and took hold of his hand.

John looked at Daniel.

‘You’re a bad wolf you are, my father will have his revenge on you.’

He closed his eyes and his head slunk to the side.

‘You should be ashamed of yourself, you caused this.’ John’s wife Annette shook her fist at Daniel and began to cry. Several people helped her to a seat so they could comfort her.

Over in the nearby park beside a small café, a blue police box materialised. It was the TARDIS.

‘We’ll just stop off here so the TARDIS can refuel, before I take you to some of the wonders of the universe.’ Said the Doctor checking the scanner.

‘Ok’ replied Rose. ‘Where are we anyway?’

‘Earth, early 2005.’ Replied the Doctor.

‘None of the Slitheen invading yet then!’ laughed Rose and headed towards the TARDIS doors and opened them.

‘Ooh! A park! Fresh air………and chips!’

‘You like your chips don’t you!’ grinned the Doctor.

‘Yeah! So?’ she smiled cheerily and nudged him on the arm.

‘Nothing! Do you want a meal? It’s about lunchtime and I haven’t eaten for a while.’

‘You could have eaten at mum’s house! Go on then!’

‘Fantastic!’ the Doctor laughed and they both headed towards the café.

‘So where about in Earth are we then?’ asked Rose chomping on a salad. ‘We must be in Britain somewhere because I had to use pounds to pay for the meal.’ She glared at the Doctor but he took no notice.

‘According to the scanner we’re in a small town called Northampton – famous for boots and shoes.’ He said.

‘Seems a nice place – very British.’ Rose grinned.

‘I don’t suppose we could stay a couple of days longer could we? It might be the last I see of Earth for a while.’

The Doctor shrugged. ‘Why not?’ he smiled.

A bit later…

The Doctor and Rose were walking along a street.

Daniel Tomkins was just locking up the church; he walked down the path towards the pavement.

‘You look a bit flustered!’ said the Doctor as they walked past. Rose nudged him.

‘Sorry, just had a death on my hands this morning.’

‘What, a funeral?’ quizzed Rose as they stopped to talk.

‘No, a man died after the service.’

‘How come?’ queried the Doctor. Daniel began to explain.

‘He took a sketch to be serious and started to cause trouble. It clearly upset him because after the service he had a heart attack…’

‘…and died?’ asked the Doctor finishing off the sentence.

‘Yes.’ Replied Daniel glumly.

‘I’m so sorry.’ Said Rose putting her hand on Daniel’s shoulder.

‘It doesn’t matter,’ said Daniel, ‘I’m used to it, I’m a minister after all!’

Rose smiled sweetly at this.

The Doctor and Rose shook Daniel’s hand and said their goodbyes.

‘Poor man.’ Said Rose as they carried on walking.

‘You think that’s sad then you should see the Golgafrinchams, they are permanent manic depressives.’

‘Ooh nasty.’ Agreed Rose.

The rest of the day was spent exploring the town. There wasn’t much that could be done as it was a Sunday and everything was closed. The Doctor and Rose returned to the TARDIS at night to sleep.

*                                                    *                                                 *

Monday seemed to come quickly for the Doctor and Rose.

‘Fantastic!’ the Doctor smiled as he leant against the TARDIS and watched the sun rise above the park that they were in.

Once it had risen, the Doctor went inside to check on how the TARDIS was doing regaining its power.

Elsewhere Alex Pratt, the organiser for the church, was whistling while jangling his keys as he approached the church.

He had some jobs to do.

As he entered the foyer Alex noticed some dirt on the carpet leading into the church.

‘Must be the caretaker.’ He thought but went to check anyway.

Everything seemed fine except for a pile of dirt by the stairs of the pulpit.

Alex walked down the aisle to investigate. He was shocked at what he saw. There was a huge hole surrounded by dirt, which seemed to go on for miles.

Alex pulled out his mobile and punched in the number for Daniel.

‘Hello?’ Daniel answered cheerfully.

‘Daniel you need to come here quickly, there’s something I think you ought to see.’

‘Ok, I’ll be there in 10!’ Daniel replied and hung up.

Alex was uncertain what to do while he waited so he decided to kneel down and look into the hole again.

He put his hand into the hole to see if he could find a bottom. Alex could feel something cold, almost ice cold.

Alex wanted to pull his hand away but whatever it was gripped on tightly. Alex’s fingers closed round the object, it felt like a long bony ice-cold hand.

Alex was frightened and tried to pull his hand away but as he pulled it out of the hole, a black clothed figure seemed to rise up from the hole too.

When the figure was fully out he let go of Alex.

‘Why thank you.’ The figure grinned. His teeth were all yellow and rotting and his face was almost like a skeleton.

Before Alex could move or say anything, the figure leant forward and grabbed Alex’s neck. He began to choke when suddenly there was a ‘click’; Alex’s neck had been snapped. He was dead.

The figure looked at the body and laughed.

Soon…

Daniel arrived at the church.

‘Alex, it’s me Daniel!’ he shouted. There was no response.

Daniel walked into the actual church, there was a man sitting on a pew praying. He wore long black robes like a priest would wear.

Daniel approached the man cautiously as usually the church wasn’t open to the public during the week.

He cleared his throat and said ‘Excuse me…’

The man looked up and smiled a toothy grin. It was the same man that Alex had seen.

‘Hello,’ he said ‘may I help you?’

‘Erm…well,’ Daniel scratched the back of his neck.

‘No?’ responded the man, ‘well I’ll help myself then!!’

The figure wrapped his arm round Daniel’s neck. He was planning to do what had been done to Alex.

Before the man could go too far, Daniel grabbed hold of the man’s elbow and twisted it so it fell away from his neck. Daniel then punched the man in the stomach, which caused the figure to stumble slightly.

He then ran out of the church into the foyer, he grabbed a chair and pushed it towards the church doors. He hoped it would hold the person back for a while.

Daniel ran outside and shut the door behind him. He fumbled in his pockets for his keys to lock the door. Just as he found his keys the doors inside burst open and the man ran towards the door but Daniel had already managed to lock it.

‘You have just made a very bad mistake!’ the man shouted.

Further along the street were the Doctor and Rose.

‘Your hair looks nice.’ Said the Doctor. Rose had been to the hairdressers that morning.

‘Thanks’ she said, ‘thought I’d have it styled a bit differently.’ Rose continued while drinking Fanta out of bottle she was carrying.

Then they both heard the noise from the church. The Doctor’s pace turned into a brisk run.

‘Problem?’ shouted Rose to him.

‘Oh yeah!’ the Doctor grinned and ran off.

‘Here we go again!’ Rose thought and screwed the top on her bottle and ran to follow him.

The Doctor stopped at the church.

‘Looks like I arrived in time!’ he said.

‘Thank goodness you did!’ replied Daniel, ‘I needed some help.’

The man who Daniel had trapped inside the church had now stopped banging on the door and was now sitting quietly on a bench in the foyer with his head down.

He looked up at the Doctor.

‘You can’t keep me in here forever, sometime you will crack, you won’t be able to contain the agony of the problem and with that you will unleash a terrible power.’ The man announced chillingly. He rose from his seat and headed towards the main church.

‘Where are you going?’ asked the Doctor.

‘You’ll find out sooner or later when it’s too late to do anything.’ The man laughed and strolled off.

‘We’ve got to stop him!’ exclaimed Rose who had arrived shortly before hand.

‘But how?’ questioned Daniel.

The Doctor thought for a moment and then said ‘Do you have any history books or records about the church?’

‘Yes, there’s some in the Vestry.’ Replied Daniel.

The Doctor pulled out his sonic screwdriver and pointed it towards the locked door. The blue glow from the device buzzed and then there was a ‘click’ to show that the lock had been opened.

The Doctor opened the door and ran towards the Vestry. Rose and Daniel followed behind.

‘What was that?’ asked Daniel.

‘It’s a sonic screwdriver.’ Said Rose.

‘Oh.’ Replied Daniel still confused.

‘It’s some sort of alien tech.’ Smiled Rose as they ran round a corner to the Vestry.

*                                                    *                                                 *

Inside the Vestry, the Doctor had already found the books on the history of the church when Daniel and Rose entered.

‘Ah, there you are! Daniel, I need you to tell me everything you know about that man’s death yesterday, I reckon it might be connected.’

‘Well,’ began Daniel, ‘the man’s name was Summers, John Summers.’

‘Narrows it down!’ grinned the Doctor. ‘Rose, look in those books see if there’s anyone called Summers.’

Daniel began to tell the Doctor about the events that had happened the previous day.

‘One thing I thought was weird’ said Daniel. ‘Was that John Summers’ wife called me a ‘bad wolf’’. He mentioned to the Doctor. The Doctor thought for a moment, as he was sure he had heard that phrase before but then grinned and passed it by.

‘Probably got mixed up with ‘bad penny’. He smiled.

Before Daniel had got too far in relaying the events, Rose, sitting on the table with her legs upon a chair, piped up – ‘Doctor, there’s something you ought to see…’

‘Go on then, read it!’ the Doctor suggested.

Rose began to read what was written in the book.

“80 years ago, the church opened with new minister Reverend Samuel Summers leading the service. Unbeknown to the congregation at the time there was something odd about Rev. Summers which would be noticed when the church entered its ‘dark ages’ which some people had called it as they believed the church had been turned into an evil cult. Rev Summers had been born with stigmata and his family had spoilt him for having it believing he was the ‘chosen one’.”

‘Stop!’ announced the Doctor. ‘I thought it was gonna be something like this – and if I’m right the whole of this country is gonna be in dreadful danger!’

‘Now why does this remind me of some sort of horror movie?’ Rose wondered to herself.

Without a moment to lose, the Doctor rushed out of the small room and headed towards the main part of the church.

The Doctor shot back at what he saw and grabbed hold of the end of two pews to steady himself. Rose and Daniel weren’t far behind and when she saw it Rose gasped.

Above the pulpit was a huge, round, blue, swirling vortex.

‘You’re too late timelord! Back when I was alive I could heal people with my powers, and I will use my powers to combine this country with the other side! No one can stop me now!’
