A Doctor Who Fan Fiction story featuring the First Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Susan.

CHAPTER EIGHT

The Doctor did not seem shocked by her words; instead he seemed to be deep in thought: his eyes held a slightly vacant expression, and he was frowning faintly. At last he said, "To be quite honest, I was expecting something a little more astonishing than that. The dramatic explanation of your eyes is perfectly credible to me".  Firestorm felt David stiffen, and he said in a voice made somewhat high with amazement "Doctor you can't be serious! Dragons do not exist; they are fantastical creatures, made-up!" At this outburst the Doctor merely smirked. "You do not have a very open mind, do you David? It is quite possible for mythical creatures to exist; in fact I once landed on a planet occupied solely by these creatures."  David stared at the Doctor for a few moments and then said, in a resigned tone of voice, "Very well Doctor, for the sake of argument, lets pretend that dragons do exist." Here he looked down at Firestorm, who was still sitting on his lap, with her head resting on his chest.  "Firestorm, what did you mean when you said you were part-dragon?" She leaned back slightly, so that her eyes held his. "This is going to be a long story, so I suggest you make yourself comfortable…" David obediently wriggled into a more comfortable position against the trunk of the tree. Firestorm sent a stern glare at the Doctor, stating firmly in her mental voice And you Doctor! The Doctor responded to her glare with an expression of wounded innocence, before smiling at her growing irritation and sitting down next to David.

Giving an exasperated sigh at the Doctor's childish behaviour, Firestorm leaned back against David's cheat, shutting her eyes and beginning her tale in a level tone of voice, as if she were reciting something. "I was born to a human couple, who led a simple and happy life. My father was the village blacksmith, while my mother did her best to be a devoted wife and provided excellent meals and a clean house to return to when he finished working for the day.  However, there was a dark side to our village which tainted the carefree lives of its inhabitants. If there was any hint of the unexplainable, or if anyone showed different characteristics to what the village was used to, they were turned on and either driven away or killed.

Now, there is a mountain range a small distance from our village, with little patches of woodland on the lower slopes. Quite a lot of nutritious herbs and mushrooms grow there and one day my mother went to the mountains because she had run out of herbs, and she wanted to use them in the evening meal. While she was there, she came across a creature which everyone in the village feared and hated. His name was 'Braxis' and he was a fully-grown red dragon. However, when my mother saw him, he had taken on the appearance of a human, the only difference being his eyes, which had not changed. In this form he seemed less threatening, and my mother did what no-one in my village dared to do. She walked to within a few feet of him and talked to him. She soon found that he was not the monster that everyone thought he was. Because he was a dragon, the villagers had instantly thought him dangerous, not realising that he was actually quite benign.

After this encounter, my mother asked if she could meet him again. Apparently he agreed, as she visited him many times, and they eventually fell in love. It is true that my mother loved my father, but he did not seem to share this love, so she decided to love another. One thing led to another, and I was conceived, don't ask me how. My father soon noticed that my mother was pregnant and was pleased; he thought I was his child. However, as soon as I was born it became apparent that I was not. My eyes were the same colour as braxis' you see, and my father was horrified." Here Firestorm halts her tale. "I'm sorry; I don't feel the time is right to tell you everything. I may do so later, but for now be content". David and the Doctor nodded and David enquired "Do you want to come back to my house?" Firestorm nodded and David stood up, lifting Firestorm off his knee and onto the ground. She smiled at him and shyly took his hand. The Doctor noticed her action and smiled to himself, before leading the way out of the forest.
