A Doctor Who Fan Fiction story featuring the First Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Susan.

CHAPTER FIVE

When Firestorm walked through the door of David's house, her eyes lit up. Artefacts and old maps covered literally every surface, and this was just one room. Ian, Barbara and Susan were staring at the room's contents in awe. Even the Doctor looked slightly surprised, although he was doing his best to hide it. Firestorm caught his eye, and grinned at his reaction. The Doctor coughed, slightly embarrassed, and said

"Well my boy, you have certainly expanded your collection. You must have travelled to many places to amass such a treasure trove of artefacts". David nodded.

"That is correct Doctor, since you left, I have indeed been to many places, and the experience has done me a lot of good." He smiled. "Forgive me for observing you all, but it seems as though our little friend Firestorm is the only one who does not seem surprised at my collection. Why is this?" This question was directed towards Firestorm who was flustered at the sudden attention. "II am not exactly sure.it is as if I knew what would be in this room before I entered it. Does that sound silly?" David and the Doctor both shook their heads. "Well, that is how I feltI also saw the room in my mind, just a fraction of a second before I entered it..." She frowned as she pondered these strange occurrences. It had never happened before, and it frightened her.

Meanwhile, Barbara and Ian had both been listening to this conversation with interest, and Susan was examining a shelf of vases. Firestorm became aware that she was staring very hard at one of the vases. She turned to look as well, just as Susan picked it up to get a closer look at it. The Doctor turned and saw what she was doing, saying sharply "Be careful child!" His voice startled her, and the vase slipped from her grasp. Firestorm watched as it began to fall, almost in slow motion. Then she realised that it was in slow motion, the vase was drifting gradually towards the ground, with a trail behind it, shadow copies of the vase were breaking away from it. The air around her prickled with something she could not identify, everything around her was dark and shadowy.

The Doctor, David, Ian, Susan and Barbara were all completely still, like statues. Then she noticed that they were moving, but moving so slowly, they did not seem to be.  She reached out to catch the vase, her arms strangely moving at their normal pace, but moving faster than the vase. As the vase began to move into her outstretched hands, she saw what Susan had been staring at. Painted on the front, with vivid colours, was a perfect copy of the dragon on the ceiling in her new room. To her astonishment, it winked at her. She actually saw one of its eyes close and open, as though it were alive, it was actually looking at her.

Then the vase settled into her hands, and there was a flash. The shadowy world vanished, and everything returned to normal. She felt the coldness of the vase in her hands. She became aware that everyone was staring at her, and she could not understand why. "W-what happened?"  No one spoke for a few seconds, and then David said, in a voice full of awe, "How did you manage to move so fast? That vase would only have taken a few seconds to hit the ground, and yet you caught it! How is it possible?" Firestorm frowned.

"What are you talking about? It moved so slowly, slower than I would have though possible, that is was easily able to cat-"  She stopped. The Doctor had just shaken his head at her, almost without moving it, indicating that she should say no more.  He then took Firestorm by the arm, beckoned to Susan and then moved towards the door, calling over his shoulder "I am going to have a discussion with Susan and Firestorm about what just happened. I shall not be long." David nodded, and engaged Ian and Barbara in an enthusiastic discussion about London and how he admired Earth culture. With a jolt of surprise, Firestorm realised that this must mean that David was not from Earth.

Once outside the room, the Doctor carefully shut the door and then turned to Firestorm, letting go of her arm. He then closed his eyes, and a memory formed in Firestorm's head. It showed the vase falling from Susan's hands, and herself moving to intercept it. She was moving so fast that all that could be seen was a brown blur, as she caught the vase she seemed to slow down enough to be seen clearly. "That is what we all saw." The Doctor opened his eyes, and then spoke bluntly. "You just manipulated Time. You saw what was going to happen to the vase and somehow slowed down Time". Firestorm stared at him. At last something was beginning to make sense. "But how is that possible? I have never done it before!" The Doctor frowned, obviously deep in thought. At last he said "Have you ever heard of a race called the Timelords?" Firestorm shook her head. "Well they are the race that Susan and I belong to. They possess many abilities, one of them being to travel through both Time and space using machines."

Susan began to say "But they are not just-", then stopped when the Doctor raised a hand and frowned at her. He waited until he was sure Susan was not going to interrupt, and then continued. "The power to control the flow of time in a certain location is an ability that very few Timelords have. Even those that do have it must train for many years to slow it like you did, and even then, they can only move at half the speed that you were moving. Somehow you are being granted extraordinary powers, and I do not know why. It scares me, as I do not know for which purpose this is happening. However, we must except that it is happening, and just wait and see". He smiled at Firestorm, perhaps to reassure her that he did not think that she was the problem. He then put an arm around both Susan's and Firestorm's shoulders, leading them back into the room where David and the rest of the TARDIS crew were.

Outside, the man who had been watching them since they had arrived whistled shrilly, and six more men appeared from various hiding places around the outside of the house. "Listen to me" he whispered. "Most likely the girl is going to be on her own outside at some point. When this happens, wait for my signal, and we will all jump her when I give the signal. There are seven of us, so it should be easy." He grinned, showing stained, brown teeth. "Cronus has said he will pay us handsomely if we bring the girl back to him. But she must still be alive, that is part of the arrangement". The men nodded their agreement and understanding, and slipped back to their hiding places. After a few moments contemplation the leader did the same.
